Back Adrian, what about using toon ink?
We use this to make the edges blurry in the comp. Normally you only need it if you have objects occluding each other. Otherwise you can use two MinMax (on the alpha) and do a MathComp Sub between to get an edge pass.

Did you try Reinhard's curvature map? Looks like it does what you ask for.
