Render Farms 2005-04-07 - By peterb

Deadline seems very cool at first glance, and if you can afford it, you probably should.
we're using smedge and it's become consistently better over the years. it supports all the softs you mention, and a bunch more. an unlimited license is 2000$ if Im not mistaken. but it needs some figuring out how to have it work happy with the different softwares and is not evolving that much anymore. the guys here weren't very please with how it supports max plugins... so they stick to maxnetrender.
even more important, you might need to modify your habits a bit to make sure that your scenes are setup for network render (but that holds true for batch rendering too) Things like keeping all texture images in the database or in a properly shared location, using .map files is often a good idea, making sure all machines can find the simulation caches. If you haven't yet, you should really check out workgroups, especially to install addons, and make sure you have the same logins, the same users directory, the same drive mappings,.... on all machines. If you have modifications to your setenv.bat file you might need to propagate them to all machines. If not you'll have a hard time sorting problems out that are not directly render related.
just some thoughts
Hi Guys,
I'm not intending to create a war here, but can you tell me which is for you the best render farm software... We are using Max, Maya, XSI, and after effects, and evaluating the posibility to buy a Digital Fusion also.
Thanks in advanced, Nacho
PD: Until now I only know deadline renderfarm, and Royal Render.
