Opteron or xeon?

well... it probably should be noted... a xeon you buy today would not be
the same class as a 2.66. Intel didn't do themselves any favors by not
changing the names of their chips... but the xeons you buy today are
very different.

They're likely to have hyperthreading.  And they're likely to have EMT64
(or is it ETM64?  I dunno... I forget).  And they're likely to have a
much larger cache.

I believe the current generation comes in speeds of 2.8, 3.0, 3.2, 3.4 etc.

For the record, I run dual 2.66 machines when I'm at school.  I run dual
3.0 with HT and EMT64 at home.  There is no comparison.  My machine runs
much faster than the one at school.  Render times approach being twice
as fast last time I checked.

I suspect that the dual opterons are still a better deal than the newer
xeons.  But its worth mentioning there are different types of xeons with
really significant differences.

The only thing I've not been able to lock down yet is wheater EMT64 is a
superset or subset of the 64bit instructions on the Opterons.  I've
heard it stated both ways at this point.  And I've not yet heard how
they perform with mental ray 64 bit on linux, relative to one another.
