I don't think that the rainbow requires some volume, can't you just take a plane (or mutliple to get a bit thickness) and finetune the rainbow in compositing? Otherwise I will release RC4 of my volume shader next week. I thin kthis will be the last Release Canditate. No new features in RC4, only documentation and more speed optimizations.
