What follows may or may not be the cause of the problem you have  but there
are some issues with UNC and mapped drives in Xsi on Windows where Xsi
sometimes transparently changes your unc paths to mapped drive paths. This
will only happen if you have drives mapped that point to the remote
resources you're pulling as unc paths. For example:-

//billy/d is mapped to X:

Just using UNC paths won't guarantee correct resolution of remote paths to
files in Xsi; there's a problem where Xsi will sometimes try and change UNC
paths to mapped drive paths. You should make sure your project isn't stored
in the project manager as a mapped drive and that you've not loaded the
scene as a mapped drive. If you have done either of these things you may
need a couple or three rounds of load and save to get rid of the mappings. I
you have a preference for UNC then you should use UNC *only*. Equally, if
you prefer mapped drives then you should use mapped drive paths *only*.
Mixing them is the thing that seems to cause problems.

In any event, the first place you should look is in the output from mental
ray in the history pane. If, for any reason, any machine can't see any file
then that's the place it'll tell you about it.

The other thing that may be causing you problems is the Windows client
license limitation where windows, by default, will only allow 10 SMB logons
to any given workstation at any given time. Naturally, being Windows, it's
greedy with it's client licenses and you'll probably find it's using 4 or 5
for other things and you'll only get 5 or 6 render machines being granted
access. The error you'll see will be a file can't be opened error.
