Back as well, I was a maya user and this seeming lack of functionality used to drive me nuts.
however I find there are other ways of solving most problems in XSI. Its often a different mindset.
For example, overrides, and map lookup nodes tend to solve a lot of problems that I'd solve with interconnected shaders in Maya.
Another useful set of nodes are the share nodes.
But its going to take a little time and experimentation to force yourself to start thinking "backwards" as it will probably feel like for a while. Especially since both shading solutions look and feel similar on the surface.
