I could be wrong, but I think he's refering to caustics. Basically, if you have a shiny piece of metal, or something similiar, the light reflects off the metal and projects light onto a nearby surface. Or those weird light patterns you see from a glass.

trueSpace doesn't support caustics ( at least I don't think it does ), though there may be a plugin or something.
