Back Hi RorrKonn -
Yes, there are several methods of SDS that are supported by various applications. The reason I mentioned this is because I used to think that there was only one way to handle subdivision of surfaces (Catmull-Clark, which most applications that do SDS use.) Because I was interested in adding subdivision of surfaces to UVMapper Professional - to better handle dividing the texture map layout as well as the model - I found that there are several methods you can use. I've implemented 3 methods in the next version of UVMapper Professional - Catmull-Clark, Doo-Sabin and Loop.
I put together a small diagram of what I'm talking about to illustrate the differences: http://uvmapper.com/wip/sds.gif
