Back I did not get any email reply from Kris or anyone else on the TSML. This only reply I have seen is from Steve. Steve all these methods of SDS you our talking about . I am guessing you our talking about deferent 3D Apps and how they SDS stuff ? As far as I know. TS 6.6 SP1 Has Subdivision Layers. on a single layer Will convert a mesh made with tri's, pentagons and above. Turns everything to Quads. You can only SDS part of a mesh with layers but it will make pentagons, hexagons. TS 6.6 SP1 also Has Quad Divide and Smooth Quad Divide.think these have been around since at least ts4. Will convert a mesh made with tri's, pentagons and above. Turns everything to Quads. LW 7.5c Has Subdivide Facet,Smooth,Metaform. more or less same thing as TS Subdivision,Quad Divide and Smooth Quad Divide. The mesh must be of quads and tri's if ya have a pent or hire in the mesh ya get a popup saying "Error polygons with more then 4 sides can't be subdivided." LW 7.5c Has SubPatch and Frezz. Frezz is same as TS Extract final surface from SDS object. SubPatch is more or less same as TS SDS except Tri's. mesh need to be quads or tri's.it will ignore a pent or hire. if ya Subpatch a mesh of quads and tri's then it divides the Tri's up in to smaller tri's.divides quads in to smaller quads. My disclaimer Not saying any apps better then another.Just saying I need all the tools I can get my hands on :) Still loyal to TS and ya better believe I will get TS7, is it out yet ? Hi Kris -
I think it depends on what method you choose to perform the subdivision of surfaces.
I'm still using trueSpace 5.1 which I believe only implements one method of SDS - Catmull-Clark. This method works best when smoothing a model made up of quads, but can handle any type of facet. Another method is Doo-Sabin, which likewise works best with quads but can handle any type of facet. If you're working with triangles, you should probably be using the Loop subdivision method as this is optimized (and requires) polys with only three sides.
Can anyone tell me if the newer versions of trueSpace support more than one method of SDS?
Steve
