Camera, visibility and orienttion menus dissapearing

This incredibly annoying behavior has been driving me crazy for as long as I
can remember.  

Sometimes, for apparently no reason, the camera, visibility and orientation
icons disappear fro the top of the 3D viewer windows and the only way I know
how to correct this is to exit XSI and restart it.

Is this a bug, a graphics issue or a feature I don't know about?
