Back Ambient light in the shading process is the result of the shader's ambient value multiplied by the scene's ambience.
Set your scene's ambience to 1 and then every shader's ambient color will come through exactly as you set it.
Also working this way you can have several groups/passes overriding several shader's ambient values (ambience will always be scene scope), in case you don't want to do individual tweaking for every single object.
What degree of control would you need that goes further then this?

Hello. I thinking about ambient light in XSI how to use it and how to get local ambient effect to an object. I need ambient an object which has a same material with another objects and I did open explorer choose a object and did double click on the ambient property of the object and there was the message that did demand confirm of making a local copy of the ambiance as it does then you make a local copy of a material but it did influence on whole scene but not the object I had chosen. I did try override to the ambient of the object it didn't work either. I had been worked with Maya some time ago and Maya has ambient light as source of a light and it allows to apply the ambiance to any object no matter which shader it has got. I did add ambient in XSI by changing RGB of ambient in a material is there any other way to get local change of ambient ? --- Unsubscribe?
