Displacement 'popping ' 2005-01-31 - By kim aldis
Back are you using 'view dependant', Lee? If not, you should be. Then set the length to 1, max subdee as high as it'll go. Adjust quality by lowering length, the lower the better the quality but the more polygons.

Hi all, running into a bit of a problem with displacement mapping on a Poly object. The object is a Poly sphere (a globe) with a displacement map for the mountain ranges - the idea is to zoom right into the mountain areas - however I'm having trouble with the render.
The displacement (driven by the alpha channel in a 6000 pixel, cylindrically mapped .map file) is set up with the geometry approximation set to 'fine' with a length of 0.33 and view dependent checked. As I'm moving into the object it starts 'popping' - adding new geometry as I move closer. Should I simply crank up (i.e. smaller number?) the 'length' setting? I want it to add geometry when needed, but not visibly.
Also I'm getting some strange circular artifacts popping on the model in areas where the should be no displacement. Unfortunately I can't post anything up on the web, so I've thrown an attatched image in. Sorry for the bandwidth...
<<Displacement.jpg>> I don't know where these come from, but they pop on and off, geometrically spaced.
