Help for a novice hobbyist,

I'm trying to simulate the movement of pistons on a crank. I've my crank
constructed as a hierarchy.

First nave attempt was to position constrain the big end to the crank pin,
but the rod does not follow the animation the pin inherits from the crank
hierarchy.  I was also hoping that constraining the piston to a line (curve
constraint) would force the piston to oscillate up and down the line without
me having to explicitly animate the % parameter.  Is what I'm trying to do
(if that is at all clear to you) possible with constraints or would it
require RBD?
