Please, don't let me dampen optimism. I'm just
trying to maintain a realistic perspective on
what's going on (or not) with SW3D development.
Personally, I'd love to see a major update to the
3D engine in, say, the next month. I'd also like
to see a concerted effort made to develop
full-featured (i.e. bones-enabled) exporters for
a number of 3D tools, to make it easier for a
wider variety of developers to create 3D content
-- something I've been advocating since before
the SW3D release. But I'm not holding my breath.

The thing is, all of this takes time. The
original SW3D development would have taken longer
but for the fact that it was based in part on
basic research done by Intel that they've used
for a variety of 3D initiatives. While a major
upgrade to SW3D wouldn't need to create an
entirely new engine, it would have to integrate
several years' worth of new technologies into the
existing engine. That's going to require
engineers who are familiar with current 3D tech
_and_ who are familiar with the guts of the SW3D
engine. I don't know how many of the latter
Macromedia has left, but my guess is, it'll take
at least a handful of them working for a number
of months to add any significant new features.
It'd be possible to pick up new engineers who
have 3D experience, but they'll have to take some
time to familiarize themselves with the SW3D
engine.

Just my 3D-rendered 2?.
