Hello Cork,
In the 3D space, we did a prototype for evolving 3D car design in Lingo for a major auto manufacturer. An artifact from the research is at http://www.redfish.com/research/shapeGA.htm. A screenshot for the 2D version is at: http://www.redfish.com/projects/. Director is perfectly suitable for this type of work and was very useful in rapid prototyping. Nonetheless, the project shifted to Java given the available skills of the developers.
About 5 years ago, we used Director to evolve neural networks via genetic algorithms for agent navigation on a factory floor. An old project write-up is at http://www.redfish.com/chaos/objectGardenIndex.htm with a functioning shockwave file, albeit with paltry UI.
Also, check out Daniel Kunkle's previous work with Andy Phelps called Alife Turtles. There's a nice write-up with sample code on Dan's site: http://www.redfish.com/dkunkle/ Director-Online: http://www.director-online.com/buildArticle.php?id=994 and Andy's site: http://andysgi.rit.edu/andyworld10/research/archives/artificial_life/index.p hp
HTH,
Stephen
