Back I don't want to sound like I'm whining, but no doubt I will! Apologies if that's what happens.
In a way, this is related to Noisecrime's post .. in that Director could really do with updating, preferably to support a wider range of developers out here. I have Milkshape and I'd love to be able to use it with Shockwave - no exporter. I have Character FX and I'd love to be able to use it with Shockwave - no exporter. I have Quill3d and numerous other 3d packages incapable of producing W3ds ... etc. etc.!
Personally, I find the choice of accepted formats / exporters is soo limiting it's untrue. Indie developers tend to be pushed into creating static objects that take wayyy too long to produce because they are modelled, exported, converted, imported, tweaked to suit the conversion, re-exported, re-converted and re-imported. As if 3d modelling isn't hard enough!
I only wish that Macromedia didn't continue to play their cards so close to their chest. It would just be so nice if Macromedia would co-operate a little more with it's developers. Talk to us! Tell us what they see as the future or .. at least, a rough idea of development schedules. It's not something I'd demand, but just look at any other programming tool and they're all too happy to tell you what's coming in the next version two years before development starts!! (slight exageration, but you get the point!)
Flash has come on so far now, challenging Director for many 2d game genres - I only hope that they are not expecting to 'grow' Flash into a replacement for Director btw - so it would be a natural progression to update Director's 3d engine and put Director back on top as Flash's Big Brother... Flash for 2d, Director for 3d and serious offline dev and prototyping. Makes sense to me!
So, if anyone comes across any kind of MD2 to W3D converter that doesn't cost more than a small car - I'd be very interested :)
And I don't suppose it's possible to make animated OBJs is it!??!
