You might want to take a look at the X3D system.  These are LCD shutter
glasses targeting gamers:

>From what I can tell, the stereo rendering is done by a driver layer on top
of the display card driver (nVidia chipsets only), so in theory, you don't
have to make any modifications to your application.  You just need a CRT
with a relatively high refresh rate (at least 120Hz at your target
resolution) and your application has to be able render via Direct3D.
Haven't tried these myself, but the kit is pretty inexpensive (119 USD).
The wireless glasses could be useful for group viewing.

I had a pair of LCD shutters that came bundled with an old Asus GeForce
card.  The effect was reasonable for a consumer-grade product, but the main
problem was the LCDs didn't turn "dark" enough IMO.  On the other hand, the
shutters of the headsets you wear at IMAX movies turn virtually opaque when
active, and do a much better job of isolating one frame to one eye.
