Stereo display plugin for Shockwave 3D? 2004-03-23 - By nick kang
Back You might want to take a look at the X3D system. These are LCD shutter glasses targeting gamers: http://www.x3dshop.com/ProductDetail/x3dsystem.html
>From what I can tell, the stereo rendering is done by a driver layer on top of the display card driver (nVidia chipsets only), so in theory, you don't have to make any modifications to your application. You just need a CRT with a relatively high refresh rate (at least 120Hz at your target resolution) and your application has to be able render via Direct3D. Haven't tried these myself, but the kit is pretty inexpensive (119 USD). The wireless glasses could be useful for group viewing.
I had a pair of LCD shutters that came bundled with an old Asus GeForce card. The effect was reasonable for a consumer-grade product, but the main problem was the LCDs didn't turn "dark" enough IMO. On the other hand, the shutters of the headsets you wear at IMAX movies turn virtually opaque when active, and do a much better job of isolating one frame to one eye.
This is a good resource for general stereo rendering and display systems: http://www.stereo3d.com
