The wire deformer would deform the latice of your object.
The base for wire deformer would be blend shape of straight line curve,
to your desired shape. This way you could have your object deform
from normal to desired shape as well. If you want to get it trough
so that is part by part is influenced and more and more, then you would
animate blendshape of wire curve and translate your object trough
lattice. I hope this makes sense...
I've done this some time ago, so I don't remember all logistics of it,
but if I grab some time, I'll get back to it...
