Lightwave and Shockwave 3D

Here's some abbreviated Lightwave to Director advice.

1.       Most modelers/animators will want to use skelegons. Tell them
to use regular bones in renderer - not modeler.
2.       Tell them to triple all of the geometry. Explain that none of
the polys may have more than 3 points.
3.       Have them export tests along the way.
4.       Tell them that if they use procedural textures they need to
bake them along the way.
5.       All layers MUST be named. (Often LW animators/modelers don't do
this and it will break the geometry on export.)
6.       LW export has been known to produce unrep errors, so it doesn't
hurt to try the same export more than twice to be sure.
7.       If you plan  to meshdeform a model, you'll need to add the
meshdeform modifier in Director. (This is almost always a bad
performance decision.)
8.       I'm sure there are more???

Subject: [Dir3d-l] Lightwave and Shockwave 3D

Hey Everyone,
I'm new to Shockwave 3D and now have my first project. A 3D artist is
building a model of a shark for me in Lightwave, and he is also new to
the concept of exporting the model to Director. Can anyone help me
understand how the division of labor will have to work? I would not only
like to have a zoomable model but to animate it as well (swim, feed,
etc.).
As understand it the 3D artist must:
-build the model in Lightwave
-export W3D file
-create bones
-create animation
On the Director end, I need to:
-apply texturing (i.e. the shark's skin)
-manipulate the camera
Does anyone have a good understanding of how far the model can be
developed in Lightwave before it must be exported to Director for
further work? Will bones be imported along with the W3D model?
Also, can anyone recommend a good 3D, easy-to-learn Xtra to pick up to
make my life easier?
Thanks from a 3D newbie. Any and all advice is welcomed.
Jason
