There's a rather huge bug with vertex lighting which kind of renders
them useless for most of our needs.
To get them to show up you must have a directional light in your scene.

This may not sound too bad, but since people are using lightmaps etc to
do away with the slow and not so great looking inbuilt lights, it
doesn't help if your lovely vertex lit world suddenly must have a
directional light source on top of your perfect calculations :/
