You might also try turning the audio hardware acceleration completely off. I
don't feel like booting into 98 right now so i'm not sure of the path to do
this nor do I remember if it exists, but on 2k it's Control Panels->Sounds
and Multimedia->Sound Playback->Advanced->Performance.
You also didn't mention the chipset; there are a number of VIA related audio
issues especially with Creative SoundBlaster Live! cards. There are patches
available from different sources -- search the web for PCI latency,
SoundBlaster Live, VIA, and patch.
Have you looked on Gateway's support site and/or the forums?
