sound issue (DirectSound Xtra)Opinions_Please_(XPOST)

Hi All,
I wrote a few days ago re: some performance issues (most annoying is the
sound stuttering) that I am experiencing. I have done hours and hours of
testing and I am hoping that if I put it out there someone might have an
idea what is going on here. I am baffled.

The issues:
-sound stuttering: interruptions in a sound that has already started
playing.
- sometimes a bitmap (button on my console) is missing (sounds are
playing when button's sprite should be turned on)
-there is sometimes a delay after a sound before its accompanying visual
action takes place (like a 'door close' sound plays and then door sprite
moves closed)
-intermittent pauses between sounds that are supposed to play one after
another
->I notice that the frame rate varies wildly (sometimes ranging from 0 -
147) at times when the sound interruptions usually occur. This does not
happen on any other machines.

The machine:
These problems only happen when the projector (3d game) is running off
the desktop of  a Gateway (GP7-8001), PIII, 800 mhz, OS: Win98. I have
tested the game in about 10 other PIII machines of higher and lower mhz
without any of the above performance issues. I have tested on two of the
same Gateway machines (profiled above) and both show same problems.
Granted these two machines are loaded with other programs (probably less
than 45 mb of available system memory) and the hard disks are pretty
fragmented, but I don't see these performance problems on any other PIII
machines and since this game is for k-12 schools, I can expect that many
of the target machines will be fragmented and congested also.

What I have done:
I have optimized the sound (resampled it down to 37.000 khz) and
preloaded it, lowered all tbe bitmaps to 16, tried game in various
monitor bit depths, created a shockwave compressed media projector,
eliminated some of the bitmaps that were visible when problems happened.
I also tried the DirectSound Xtra (www.directXtras.com) which did
resolve the sound stuttering problem but because of the way I built the
game and because the DirectSound xtra can only play external sound
files, it would mean some major rewriting of my game to rely on this
xtra for playing all my sound.

Any ideas what is going on?

Thanks much,
Paul
