Perhaps it wasn't personal Andre, but some of the emails on this list
directed towards me and often towards others have been escalating from
innocent sarcasm to personal bashing, putdowns and insults lately. Some of
the individuals have a bully attitude here where you're either a part of the
gang and agree with their opinion, or you're being dissed because you dared
to disagree. Democracy is not something that I observed on this list for a
long time. What surprises me a bit, is that those threads are not abrogated
by SI. But then again, I should not be surprised as a few weeks ago I have
received a bit offensive email from one of the SI employees themselves.
It appears ironic to me that we are all here due to a common interest and
passion, yet many of us can not be friends. So unprofessional, pathetic and
sad. I admit that I'm not without a blame. I wasn't contributing to the list
for a long time other than flooding with some pointless emails. This however
I find as no excuse for others to publicly insult and humiliate myself and
often others. A few individuals on here believe that their opinion is much
more valuable than others and if you don't agree with you deserve to get
flamed. I've done it myself, too. This bully attitude has been escalating
though. Others try to gain some attention by joining the insults, as in case
of myself without even ever knowing me or talking to me personally. It's
understandable - they are trying to hang around with the 'big boys' on
here. Internet has given us a shield behind which we can hide, pretend to be
brave and even going as far as insulting others, without the fear of getting
our as*es kicked. I sometimes wonder if internet creates friends or enemies.
I do believe that if we all met together at a party we'd have a great time.
Yet here however, on a mailing list where we meet to share out passion, some
people bully others out, insult them, humiliate them, discredit their
opinions.
Perhaps you might think "Luke it's only you". Well, after last thread about
shader-balls and one other, I have received 7 or 8 emails from different
people saying that they totally agreed with me but there were afraid of
saying anything on the list because they didn't want to get flamed. Because
these days if you say anything other than the 'big brothers' on the list you
will get flamed by them all. Heck, if you say anything on the list it
usually ends up as flaming war. This should not be happening and is indeed
very sad imho.
I personally decided from now on not to get into any of the flame wars, but
I think it would be just so much more fun and easier if we would treat each
other as equals on here and understand that we are all here for the same
purpose and that even though out opinions often differ we are individuals
with different needs, workflows and applications. I think that it is time we
revoked some respect for others on this list.
Don't bother (not you Andre, anyone :-) responding to this thread as I'm
ignoring it from now on. I didn't write this to start another war, but just
to hopefully give you all something to think about. We could and should all
be friends on this list... we should all have respect for others and
acknowledge the differences and even perhaps learn from them. Instead of
abasing and abhorring and abnegating each other perhaps we should all get to
know each other better.
