Back MessageThe mental ray SSS phenomena use two core shaders. The first shader is fast but not physically based, and is intended for rendering skin. The second is more accurate but requires GI. I don't know about the second one, but the first cannot currently work with XSI because a light map shader is used to collect irradiance, and XSI does not support light map shaders. Until XSI supports light map shaders, the only way to use the fast SSS shader is to render with stand-alone mental ray after processing the .mi files with a script that inserts the shader declarations and definitions. -- Jim Rothrock | jimr@(protected)

My thoughts exactly....
Im sure the fake SSS are good enough...it was just the thought that it had been there all along....and I didn't know!

i was kinda thinking the same thing..
i mean the one mark showed was impressive... but.. since it used GI.. it kinda made me wonder a bit about how much i could use it in production.. where as the fake i could see myself using much more...
plus the whole question of my machine.. vs. the kickass machines they had at the user group demo.
i was mostly concerned that they said the one inside XSI .. so i felt like. . its been there the whole time??? why didn't i know?

Wow the way this shader is being anticipated, and the way Mental Images are being so cloack and dagger about the whole thing, you'd think they were releasing an entirely new renderer.
Given that there are a few free fake SSS shaders fIoating around, it really that big a deal?
