Realtime shaders and directx viewers

Realtime shaders and directx viewers

Hi,

Maybe a stupid question, but are the DirectX realtime shaders to be
viewed outside the dotxsi format, i.e. the .x format in perticular??

We're running our own inhouse 3D viewer applet for multimedia content,
and I'm looking into the realtime shaders for adding extra realism to
the models and such.
The viewer is based on the MS .x implementation/viewers. Is it all based
on DirectX9, or version 8 and up??
I'm looking for additions like bumpmapping, ?normal mapping? and alike.

Sorry if this stuff is in the manuals, but I haven't really worked with
this yet and I couldn't find anything very related.

Cheers,
