16 bit should be fine, although I suspect that most recent cards would perform better in 32 bit. The one bit depth you should avoid is 8 bit as that has slowly begun to be dropped by some cards/drivers.
The only reason to use 16 bit these days is if its a really old card, or if you are limited by texture memory, as a 16 bit texture will take up half the space of a 32bit one (unless sw3d uses on card compression which I don't think it does)
