Real Lingoists don 't use AMD?! 2004-02-08 - By Roman Blöth
Back Hello dir3d-l - readers,
recently I'd posted a message concerning weird system crashes while developing a 3D-app using camera-input (you might know the Playstation "Eye-Toy").
After a while I had posted that our problem was the mouse driver, but this turned out to be only part of our problem: System crashes were much less, but still remained.
Finally (!) we have the facts one needs to know for avoiding our trail for bugfinding...
When we put our machine under heavy load (using video capturing with 30 fps is a quite heavy load for the USB 2.0 - and Dir3D for the whole system...) and it is running an AMD Athlon XP processor, it will crash after a while, when running on an Intel machine, it runs and runs and runs.... without any problems.
I can tell you, this "bug" was very, very hard to track and I'd wish no one ever to run into this. This also gives the "Optimized for Intel"-claim a totally new sense - at least to me.
We have 2 Intel systems here, which never seem to crash running our app, and the rest are AMD Athlon machines, always crashing...
Here once again for convenience our technical details: ======================================================
OS: Windows 2000 professional OR/AND Windows XP professional (didn't make any difference)
RAM: 1 GIG
Processor: AMD Athlon XP
Boards: ASUS A7***
Graphics device: ATI Radeon 9800 pro
External device: Belkin HiSpeed DVD creator (USB 2.0) (though it was not necessary to actually use this in order to getting a system crash)
Xtra: TrackThemColors (not "pro")
With this configuration - I believe - everyone could observe quite frequent system crashes out of the following types:
* Director crashes * Blue Screen (IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL....) * Sudden System Reboot
I'd really be interested in every contributions you could make to this observation! Director seems to be "Degraded for AMD" to me...
