Assuming a decently performing scene (and high end consumer card), a 640 x 480 sprite may yield no difference between AA and non-AA, while at 1600 x 1200 the AA version may run considerably slower (50% or less) than the non-AA.
The different flavors of AA all factor in as do your filter and mipmap settings.
