Back I have had my fair share of problems and it wasn't half as complex (character struggling in it) as what you are trying to do.
One word on a problem I smashed my face on when doing it with textures: The filaments' width will be stretching, while in reality they only stretch along their length.
In the end I had to do a ridiculous amount of grunt work to crate a spring network set of nulls and drawing curves between them, then had smaller patches with the smoky texture of the smallest bits being kept in tension and relaxed by that.
In v4 you could have a much easier living then I had using cloth, extracting a network of edges in curves and patching that. Good luck Andre, for me that has been a really painful week.

Hi all texturing geniuses out there
I have a shot that is goign to require cobwebs draping over a character (a la Indiana Jones). I figure I would drape a grid over the object and use cloth to relax it into place but the texturing/shading side of things could get a little tricky.
Anyone had any expericen with this effect? I am concerned that using trasnparency maps could force us to use very high res images to overcome antialising. Pehaps a clever shader someone has come up with?
