As far as I know, this is the state of play with Max, Plasma and the
exporters etc...

Shockwave Exporter #1 was released for free, works with Max 4.x etc (
also works with 5 ), doesn't support skinning etc unless using Character
Studio.

Shockwave Exporter #2 and Plasma released as same time, and offering
enhanced exporting options ( ie skinning using bones ).  Shockwave
Exporter #2 can only be purchased by buying Plasma, and then installing
it from the same CD.  This can be used with Max 4 and 5.

As far as I'm aware, the exporters should be the same for Max 6.

So if you want the latest Max exporter for any version of Max, you
purchase Plasma and install it from the CD.  If you want the free older
version, it will also work with any > Max 4 versions.

BTW both Max exporters have a number of 'features' such as not exporting
hierarchical animations if you haven't grouped and parented the nodes,
and transferred animations, moved pivot points etc.  This free exporter
automates all of these tasks and more at...

http://www.candomultimedia.com/games/Plasma

Quite a few companies on this list seem to be using it, so it has been
well tested for most regular tasks ( NOTE: our exporter uses the
existing Max exporter  ( either v#1 or v#2, or the v#2 built into Plasma
) and it just wraps itself around it and automates all of the manual
tasks most artists have to go through to perform hiererchical animations )

Hope this helps...
