Back Funily the displacement is tied to the polygong geometry you send to mental ray , therefore if you subdivide the object further (let's say is a subdiv object to level 2) to for example level 4, this will increase the ammount of detail along with your render times. :-(
This is plain wrong, and would even say double plain wrong but is just to long to explain... i guess is one of those architectural constraints that hopefully will be updated soon with the next mental ray release and some tweaks in XSI.
<rant> My problem with the system is the way is done, i just want to indicate the max displacement and the displacement map, that is it, all the rest should be automatic AND efficient as it is on Air for example. </rant>
