Lucas,

Thanks for the insight! I appreciate the help...

Just to clarify, it would be better to have say 2 512s versus 8 128s. Is
that true?

Thanks,

less textures that are large. sw3d has a relativly large penalty for
each mesh being drawn. for each different texture in max, the exporter
creates a different shader in the w3d file. the model is split up in 1
mesh per shader..  so 4 textures gives you a 4 mesh model, which has 4
times this relatibly large speed hit.

As a rule of thumb, always make sure you have as little meshes per model
as possible, and as little models as possible. (group in max when you can)

Bye, Lucas

Hello everyone,

I've been lurking on this list for quite some time now just barely finding
the time to work on 3D in Director. But now I have a project that is above
my skill set and need to sub it out. If anyone is interested please contact
me off list. Here are some things that I can tell you which might interest
you or turn you off. Because of the tight deadline I will need working
examples to view.

1. Racing game (Oval Track)
2. CD-ROM and on-line (2 versions)
3. Tight turn around, January 19th (I know crazy isn't it)

new on the 3D front in MX04?

Well, I'm not Mal and I don't know that I can speak for him but I can talk a
bit about Director MX 2004 as it is something I do know about. ;) Yes, there
are 3D changes in this release but *please* cool the jets, the changes
coming down the pipe are nowhere near what folks here are going to
expect/want. No, we did not fix z-depth sorting of semi-transparent objects,
no we did not do robust rendering layer changes, please do not go overboard
with expectations. Gee, can you tell I'm trying to deflate the balloon
quickly? Sorry 'bout that...

We've implemented some isolated improvements dealing with ray casting (both
modelsUnderLoc and modelsUnderRay) as well as made changes to anti-aliasing
(hardware based support in DirectX). This is not the wanted version 2
release of the 3D engine so I don't want folks here to get wound up
expecting the whole pie and instead only getting a small slice. Here's a
quick summary of the 3D changes:

modelsUnderLoc and modelsUnderRay
These methods now take the old style calls or a new style call. The new
style allows you to specify additional parameters including a maximum ray
cast distance and a list of models among which to cast. Both of these
combined will allow you to make your ray casting calls more efficient as you
don't have to cast against the entire scene, only those in your list of
models and/or within the range specified.

anti-aliasing
If the end user has DirectX installed and their card/drivers support
hardware-based anti-aliasing you can then turn that on/off from within
Director as needed.

I'm around if any further questions come up.

Oh well, here are some questions, although I doubt you can answer them
all :)

- Is the wanted 3d xtra v2 going to happen and if so when?
- What kind of changes will there be to the shockwave download? Is this
a new version of everything or just some xtras?
- The website mentions an updated XML parser. Will this xtra be included
in the standard download now?
- When is the trial going to be available so we can have a play for
ourselves?

Thanks,
Pascal.

Since eveyrone is spilling the beans ;-)

> - Is the wanted 3d xtra v2 going to happen and if so when?

I'm not with macromedia in any way, but I'm sure the answer to this will
be 'we don't know'

> - What kind of changes will there be to the shockwave download? Is this
> a new version of everything or just some xtras?

the core player is updated, so you'll need pretty much a new version of
everything. I actually don't know if the install is able to recycle non
updated xtras or not.

> - The website mentions an updated XML parser. Will this xtra be included
> in the standard download now?

I'm not sure. Is it a big deal however? AFAIK the XML parser does not
throw the scary 'do you want to install this on your computer' dialogue.

Bye, Lucas
