It's been a while, and I haven't tested this in XSI 4.0, so sprinkle on the salt... :-)
MB properties should work the same way as geometry approximation. By default, it is applied as a shared property at the scene root level, but if you assign a local property node, that will override the global MB settings.
Render>Get>Property>Motion Blur
You'll probably want to do a simple test on a couple of object. Let us know if it works out.
